Transformation
In November 2019 the Victorian Government announced there will be a gradual transition away from native forest harvesting to a plantation-based timber supply. The Government will support VicForests undertake a transformation, innovation and diversification program for the native timber sector to assist in the transition for affected businesses and individuals. This includes the retention of current harvest levels to 2024, then a reduction over time through to cessation by 2030. The VicForests announcement on this change can be viewed at VicForests Supports Native Timber Transformation.
The Victorian Government has developed the Victorian Forestry Plan to assist the industry with the gradual transition away from native timber harvesting. This can be viewed at the following link at Victorian Forestry Plan. The reform package enables VicForests to continue to provide significant opportunities for the sector to diversify into new sources of timber, new products and new markets.
