Species in our Forests
There are a wide range of different species of plants and animals that make up the forests that VicForests work in. Conservation of these values is a vital part of ecological sustainable forest management. It is undeniable that the diversity (of genes, species and ecosystems) is fundamental to ecosystem function and therefore, forest health.
Victoria’s State forests are managed in accordance with some of the world’s highest standards of forest management.
VicForests have developed a threatened species management framework that is complimentary to the existing legislative requirements governing threatened species management across the State. This management framework involves surveying for threatened flora and fauna species in areas available for timber harvest, to further improve their management and protection.
We have begun to compile profiles of threatened species found in our forests which we will continue to build upon in the coming months.
